Expectant parents need so many items that it can become overwhelming. Everyone tells you what you need and what you don't, but ultimately it is a personal choice. Sandra Lee started a great list with her article Top Ten Baby Items for Expectant Parents. Read on for an additional five necessary items for expectant parents.

1. Car Seat
Sandra Lee mentioned a stroller in her article. While her description of the stroller mentioned that it is part of a travel system and comes with an infant car seat, her article neglected to mention a car seat separate from the travel system. A travel system comes with the stroller, infant car seat base, and infant carrier that snaps into the base. These car seats can be used generally up to twenty pounds, but check the manufacturer guidelines. Once the baby has exceeded this amount, she will need a standard car seat. A personal favorite is the Britax Roundabout. The Britax Roundabout has the highest in safety stats, is easy to install, and is very comfortable. My daughter falls asleep easily in her Britax Roundabout. A car seat is one of the most necessary items for expectant parents.

2. Bassinet
A bassinet is a great item to have with e newborn baby and any expectant parent would surely get use out of one. When choosing a bassinet, look for one that is on wheels. This makes life so much easier if you want to bring the baby into the bedroom, living room, or even the bathroom while you take a quick shower. Many bassinets now come with the ability to lower one side so that the bassinet can be brought right up next to the bed. This is safer than co-sleeping but provides the closeness that parents enjoy and can make it easier for those night feedings. Most bassinets now come with an attachment that includes soothing classical music and a vibration feature. These can be invaluable to a parent who is running on little sleep. A bassinet is not an absolute necessity for the expectant parent, but it can make life a little smoother.

3. Bottle Warmer
A bottle warmer can make life infinitely easier. In the good old days, bottles were heated up in boiling water. While some mothers still use this method, others foolishly put the bottle into the microwave. This can be very dangerous and is not recommended by and bottle manufacturer. A bottle warmer can heat up an entire bottle in under a minute. This is great for when the baby is crying and inconsolable. A bottle warmer will help save time and sanity, making it a necessary item for expectant parents.

4. Baby Bathtub
Obviously, it would be difficult and unsafe to bathe a baby in a regular size bathtub. While it is possible to bathe an infant in the sink, a baby bathtub makes the process significantly easier and safer. Many of the baby bathtubs now come with a flexible insert that will cradle the baby and keep her head above the water. This will free both of your hands to wash the baby and wrap the baby in a towel. Some baby bathtubs are even equipped with a shower attachment, making it that much easier to rinse off your newborn. A baby bathtub is a necessity for the expectant parent.

5. Medical Supply Kit
A medical supply kit can be purchased already put together or can be purchased separately. The medical supply kit should contain such items as a rectal thermometer, Vaseline, infant Tylenol or Motrin, gas relief drops, Baby Orajel, and a syringe for dispensing medication. These items are always good to keep on hand and the thermometer is definitely a necessity. Every expectant parent should keep a medical supply kit on hand so when the baby does become ill, there is no need to worry or have to head out to the store. Nobody likes to see their child sick or in pain and so a medical supply kit can help ease the worry. The expectant parent will need these items.

There are so many things the expectant parents need. Some of the necessities include a car seat, bassinet, baby bathtub, medical supply kit, and bottle warmer. Each of these items will make life a little easier on the parents of a newborn.

The goal of going green is reducing your carbon footprint. Whether you're trying to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide or other chemicals put into the atmosphere, trading in ordinary products made with some degree of chemicals with organics is one step for going green. Green products can range from household cleaning products to organic clothing to, if you're a parent, organic baby products. For the latter, organic baby products are simply similar products to those geared toward adults but made in smaller sizes.

If you have a baby or are planning for one, the first place to go green with your baby is the nursery. A baby sleeps seventy percent of its first year and, ultimately, this area should be free of chemicals. Ordinary, non-organic baby products are often made with many chemicals innately, as cotton is grown and processed with many chemicals and objects like baby mattresses are treated with chemicals like formaldehyde, phthalates, or poly brominated diphenyl ethers to be fire retardant or softer, if the product is plastic. By replacing these chemically-treated materials with something organic, the chemicals inherently in these products are removed and won't contaminate your baby's nursery.

Organic baby bedding is one baby product that can easily be replaced by organic cotton. Although organic cotton baby products are often associated with an off-white color, which comes from the wax not being stripped off the cotton fibers, organic baby bedding is now available in many colors, most of which are made with natural vegetable or plant-based dyes. Aside from the crib bedding, other organic baby products for a nursery include mattresses, which are made of rubber or cotton. An organic cotton baby mattress is often a popular choice because it is more affordable and, aside from the internal metal springs, the entire mattress is made from organic cotton – filling, outer shell, and threads. A rubber organic mattress uses an organic cotton shell, as well, but the inside is an organic rubber core that behaves much like memory foam. Both of these mattresses use organic wool in the outer shell in place of PBDEs for a fire retardant barrier and, in place of a vinyl mattress pad treated with phthalates, these organic mattresses use food-grade polyethylene in case of leaks.

Organic cotton is also used commonly in baby clothing, as well as all-natural dyes made from vegetables and plants. Another common material for organic baby products is bamboo, however, but, when looking for organic baby clothes, check to see if organic bamboo fibers are mixed with organic cotton or rayon. While a mixture of bamboo and organic cotton still creates an organic baby product, mixing it with rayon does not. In addition, basic baby clothing, such as onesies, footies, and socks for babies at all stages can be purchased through various organic baby products retailers.

How do you go about purchasing organic baby products? Retailers online sell exclusively organic baby products but, to be labeled as organic, a product needs to contain at least 95 percent organic components. In other cases, such as with organic mattresses, the products will comply with more specific standards, such as those of NAOMI (National Association of Organic Mattresses Industry).

After I found out I was having a boy, the first thing I did was look for themes for his bedroom. It seems like almost all the themes that I found for baby boy's bedrooms were either sports or animals. I wanted to have something a little different for my son. I came across a website called babysupermall.com and found tons of different styles for baby boys. They have a huge variety for nursery's and little boy's bedrooms and for gender neutral and girl's bedrooms.

The theme that I like the best for my son was called “Construction Zone.” The theme consists of dump trucks, cement trucks, bulldozers and tractors. The color pallet is light blue, green, red, yellow and navy blue. We ordered the 6 piece crib set which included a comforter, a 4 sided bumper, a fitted sheet, diaper stacker, valance, and a dust ruffle for the crib. We also ordered the “Construction Zone” border for the bedroom along with the wall hanging. We also ordered the drapes from the “Construction Zone' theme. We decided to pain the bedroom yellow and hung the “Construction Zone” border in the middle of the wall around the whole room. We hung the drapes and the valance and put the wall hanging up. After we put everything up and the bedroom was all finished, I thought we made the perfect choice for our little boy's bedroom. It was some different, but something that most little boys would love when they get older. What little boy doesn't like getting dirty and playing with trucks?

Now that I am pregnant again and we do not know the sex of the baby yet, I am again looking for different themes for a baby boy's bedroom. I received a catalog in the mail from JcPenney's and I fell in love with the modern themed bedroom set that they had for boys. There are two sets that I would recommend. The first is called the “Mod Turtle” bedding set. It is a blue and brown set that has turtles and polka dots on it. You can see this set at http://www.jcpenney.com. The other set that I would recommend for a modern look for the baby boy's bedroom is called “Luke” by Bananafish. It is also available from JcPenney's website. The colors on this set are light blue, brown, and off white. It is a rather plain theme with only polka dots and stripes but I just love the simple contemporary look of the set.

If you want something different, besides the normal sports or animals for your baby boy's bedroom, I strongly recommend that you look into the sites that I provided above. They have helped me out tremendously find different options for my child's rooms and I just love the way that he can have a different room and still be a little boy's bedroom.
